The inspiration for the “Whites” series was the family move from Florida to Iowa in the middle of a snowy winter. The dramatic shift in climate and topography as well as a sense of personal disorientation made me run to the studio for warmth and comfort. Feeling that my life was out of control I sought control through setting working parameters – a very limited palette and the process of strip piecing, slashing, and reassembling. Using images of the Iowa landscape through airplane windows, as I traveled back and forth, and using the view through the rear window of my new home I had planned to make five quilts but it easily flowed into 11 works before I’d finished.

The Story/Autobiographical pieces balance out the other purely abstract and geometric work. Quilt making is so often a story in itself – where fabric was found, solution to design problems, where it will be displayed - so telling a life story – mine or someone else’s is a natural addition to this fiber art process.

My designs move from abstract images to more pictorial to geometric and back. In the geometric series there is a clarity and simplicity focusing on small shape and color variations that gives me a more straigtforward "intellectual" expression than the story quilts.
